Blow (2001 Film)

Blow (2001 Film) Review

The first half of this soundtrack features a nice collection of Brit-rock stalwarts showing off their American influences. There's the Santana-ish majesty of Mick Taylor's guitar during the extended instrumental coda to the Stones' "Can't You Hear Me Knocking"; Cream, Faces, and Ram Jam all messing around with Yank blues (the latter doing unmentionable things to Leadbelly's "Black Betty"); even Manfred Mann doing his best to sanitize Springsteen with "Blinded by the Light." But then things start getting strange. Salsa legend Willie Rosario segues inexplicably into KC & the Sunshine Band's "Keep It Comin'," while the postmodern lounge of J Girls gets to rub up against good ol' boys Skynyrd and Tucker. By the time we come to Bob Dylan's "All the Tired Horses," Blow has collapsed into such an oddball grab bag that the obligatory inclusion of a contemporary label hopeful, in this case Nikka Costa, isn't the least bit jarring. Then again, incoherence is the privilege of compilation soundtracks, and there's little here to send you lunging for the skip control. --Bill Forman

Nick Didkovsky: Ice Cream Time

Nick Didkovsky: Ice Cream Time Review

Nick Didkovsky s music reflects current trends and practices including the use of live, interactive computer-assistance, genre jumping, and blurring the distinctions between highbrow and lowbrow. Although the accoutrements of Western tonality are never far off, his musical sensibility allows for some radical departures from the stock-and-trade of tonality. Didkovsky is attracted to the ambiguous boundaries between human-generated and software-generated materials. Ice Cream Time (2003) is a multi-movement piece scored for saxophone quartet, electric guitar, and live electronics. As might be expected, Ice Cream Time embraces, or engages with, a wide range of influences and material contrasts. Nine of the movements feature live sampling by Thomas Dimuzio, whose job was to capture and process the saxophone and guitar sounds in real time, using his Kurzweil K2600RS. Because the unaltered signals are also heard, a rich and subtle texture is produced.

Cream Cuts

Cream Cuts Review

Cream Cuts Feature

  • Electronic/Experimental, Pop
Cream Cuts finds Tussle expanding upon it's own unique mix of drums, bass & electronics, at times echoing the elasticity & straight forward live approach of their debut, Kling Klang, but with more color & complexity, while also integrating the psychedelic pulsating pound heard on Telescope Mind. Moving above & beyond their first two releases, Tussle map out worlds upon worlds on Cream Cuts, riding songs from creation to destruction to rebirth. Thom Monahan's (Vetiver, Joanna Newsom, Silver Jews, Devendra Banhart) unconventional production techniques & talent for capturing intimate performances integrate with Tussle's krauty exploration of rhythm leading to the bands most epic, experimental yet holistic release to date.

Sonic Nurse

Sonic Nurse Review

If all Sonic Youth albums pretty much sound alike, as skeptics grumble, some Sonic Youth albums definitely sound more alike than others. And Sonic Nurse is one of those. Practically Sonic Youth concentrate, the disc manages to sound like a distillation of the band's career and a promise that they can keep doing this forever. Sonic Youth has trimmed away its more direct hooks, while also curbing its artier indulgences. That isn't to say that melody or noise is absent--especially when it's Kim Gordon's turn to rant on cuts such as "Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream"--but that these elements are carefully balanced and defer to an overall sound that's richer than ever now that newest member Jim O'Rourke has fully integrated himself into the band's gestalt. The mood may be pastoral and domestic, but often, as on "Peace Attack," it's grounded in an undercurrent of concern. --Keith Harris

Fresh Live Cream

Fresh Live Cream Review

Cream's legendary status is extraordinary, given that the three musicians, Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, were only together from 1966 to 1968. This music video collector's DVD tells the story of that intense period from Cream's inception as a blues band through psychedelia to their place in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rare archive performance footage of complete tracks (notably from their 1968 appearance at the Revolution Club in London) are linked by Ginger, Eric and Jack telling the story afresh in interviews filmed in April 1993 exclusively for this production. Songs: Spoonful, I Feel Free, Tales of Brave Ulysses, We're Going Wrong, Anyone for Tennis, Sunshine of Your Love, I'm So Glad, Politician, White Room, Toad.

Waiting So Long: The Ultimate Collector's [Vinyl]

Waiting So Long: The Ultimate Collector's [Vinyl] Review

When the band performed in 1966, Eric Clapton was already fairly well known, having performed and recorded with the Yardbirds and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, but it wasn't until Cream that Clapton became a global superstar. Breaking free of the traditional rock and roll song structure for a more improvisational/jazz influenced take, the band's long jams gave birth to a whole new approach to rock music. Don't miss your chance to get these amazing collector's editions of three of the four official Cream studio albums in one vinyl box set. The set includes Fresh Cream on clear red vinyl, Wheels of Fire (studio) on white vinyl and Wheels of Fire (Live) on white vinyl and Goodbye on picture disc.

Cream Ibiza '07

Cream Ibiza '07 Review

Cream is synonymous with Ibiza and Cream Ibiza is generally accepted as THE biggest night on Ibiza. Here Cream team up with their newest regular Ibiza resident recruit, Eddie Halliwell. Eddie Halliwell has, over the past 3 years, moulded himself into a true superstar DJ and can genuinely claim to be the leader of the new school of global DJ's. Eddie is recognised for intense DJ sets incorporating his own brand of scratching, his own exclusive re-edits and live sampling that leave crowds around the globe continually gagging for more. Cream Ibiza - Eddie Halliwell doesn't disappoint delivering an awesome snapshot of Eddie's DJ talent over two CD's representing two sides of his musical tastes. Disc one is a journey through twisted pumping house and electro whilst disc two is a full on main room session of techno and tech-trance. Both mixes will include exclusive re-edits of key tracks by Eddie himself created to enhance this album to the max. Cream Ibiza - Eddie Halliwell will, in the immortal word's of Eddie himself, be guaranteed to "Fire It Up" this summer on many a soundsystem!

Perfecto Presents... Sandra Collins

Perfecto Presents... Sandra Collins Review

Sandra Collins is, without question, one of the most recognizable, well loved, and respected DJ¹s on the planet. With her incessant nationwide touring, massive press coverage, top selling mix CDs, and rock star persona, Sandra has developed into not only the top female DJ in America, but the top DJ, period. In fact, the DanceStar Awards (the dance music ³Grammy¹s²) made it official, awarding the 2003 ³Best DJ² award to Sandra over the likes of Louie Devito, Deep Dish and Bad Boy Bill among others. This award is the most recent accomplishment in a long list of stellar career achievements which include her award as URB Magazine¹s 1999 "Best Female Artist" (in honor she shared with Lauryn Hill), her six hour set following Moby in front of 80K screaming fans at the ¹99 Woodstock Festival, best selling mix CD¹s for Tranceport and Cream, a massively popular residency at legendary NYC club Twilo alongside Sasha & Digweed and Paul Van Dyk, and breakout coverage in mainstream press such as Spin and Gear. Recently signed to the Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto roster, Sandra Collins presents her most accomplished work to date, a brilliant 2XCD mix which builds upon her signature combination of melodic vocal anthems and darker prog material.
